College may not be the best path

College is a new, exciting, and fun experience for young people. I believe deeply in the value and power of education and love guiding students toward their degree. But for some, college may not feel like the right fit and that can be a difficult realization for both students and parents.

Working full time can be a great experience and can teach young people so much about their interests and skills. Hands-on training and apprenticeships are a great option. And there are rich volunteer experiences that can introduce students to career areas they may never have considered. Sometimes young people just need a little time to figure things out and may return to get an education when they are ready.
